¼ cup of used coffee grounds

2 tablespoons of organic raw sugar

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

3 tablespoons of liquid cold-pressed or virgin coconut oil

  1. Start by brewing a morning coffee using freshly ground coffee beans.

  2. Once you have finished your cup of joe, remove the waste coffee grinds from your coffee press and add the remaining ingredients to a small bowl.

  3. Using a spoon, mix until well combined.

  4. Take up a possie on your aft deck near the water’s edge to liberally scrub away the salt and grime from the bodies of you and your crew.

  5. Once you are satisfied that every square inch of your motley crew has been sufficiently exfoliated jump into the ocean to wash away the grinds and all dirt from your weeks at sea. This may require vigorous swim strokes to ensure all the grinds are washed away.

Serves 2 Grotty Yachties

What is a coffee scrub good for?

This scrub is the perfect deep exfoliant to remove dead skin cells and all that sea salt that grotty yachties accumulate after weeks at sea! Some research suggests that caffeinated coffee may help reduce the appearance of cellulite, filled with antioxidants, it helps to firm the skin's surface. With the added benefits of cold-pressed coconut oil; containing an array of fatty acids, vitamin E, and vitamin K nutrients, this oil will nourish the skin with these anti-microbial, anti-bacterial, and moisturizing properties.

Not only is a good for the skin but it’s great for the comradery aboard- sharing a morning of self-love and pampering for the body!

Is it okay to use this body scrub on your face?

While there are many benefits to using these ingredients on your face, we have found that the abrasive nature of the course coffee grinds may be a little too harsh on sensitive skin like your face. If you do choose to use this scrub on areas of sensitive skin use sparingly and scrub gently.

How long does this scrub last?

Given this is an all-natural blend with no artificial preservatives we recommend whipping up only as much as you will use in one aft deck spa party, this doesn’t always store well.

Why should you use virgin or cold-pressed coconut oil?

Virgin or cold-pressed coconut oil is known to be the highest quality of coconut oil, given that the process used to extract the oil. Without the use of extreme heat and chemicals the final product is a raw unrefined oil and retains far more nutrients like its natural fatty acids, and natural antimicrobial and antibacterial qualities. So, using an oil that has not been refined with chemicals, bleached, and odorized will increase your likelihood of reaping the many benefits of coconut oil in its purest form along with a delicious soft aroma of tropical coconuts.

Does coconut oil give you breakouts?

Those with acne-prone skin or naturally oily skin sometimes find that coconut oil can cause breakouts given its comedogenic properties, especially if used in a cooler climate. If this is the case simply switch coconut oil for lighter, thinner textured oils such as Almond oil, grapeseed oil, sunflower seed oil, or hempseed oil.

What are the key benefits of adding cinnamon to your scrub?

Many claim that cinnamon is a wonder spice for skincare. In seafaring history, cinnamon was one of the spices worth more than its weight in gold, being shipped to royalty across the globe. These days cinnamon is far more readily available but its immense medicinal properties remain the same;

  • It contains anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties making it a godsend for those who suffer from acne or fungal skin concerns at sea

  • With a range of powerful antioxidants means this aromatic spice can help with preventing the signs of ageing, protecting you against damage caused by free radicals

  • Cinnamon is a warming spice that can stimulate blood vessels promoting more blood flow to the skin. This is what makes your skin look plumper and more evenly-toned.

  • With regular use in your skincare routine, its anti-inflammatory properties can help to achieve clear, glowing skin, reducing redness and healing imperfections on the skin's surface faster.

  • Be sure to seek out the best quality spices you can afford, ideally as fresh as possible, fair-trade & organic. Check out Mountain Rose Herbs (supporting us through our affiliate link) for a great range in the US.

What are the key benefits of adding vanilla extract to your scrub?

This sweet, warm, rich aroma of vanilla not only adds a wonderful flavor to wholesome meals, it also can calm the mind and restore essential properties in the skin. Vanilla extract is rich in antioxidants, neutralizing free radicals to prevent skin damage like fine lines, wrinkles, and age spots. Vanilla is also loaded with various B vitamins which help to maintain overall skin health-protecting it from damage caused by environmental pollutants and toxins.

*Disclaimer: As with all new beauty products test a small area of your skin with the scrub to ensure you do not have any adverse reactions and stop using immediately if you have any signs of an allergic reaction or if irritation occurs.
